Leftover Egg Nog is just an amazing boozy milkshake waiting to happen (and if you have booze free egg nog, then you have both options!)

Three different egg nog milkshakes on a counter.

The holidays have come and gone. The leftover lamb was made into a shepherd’s pie, the turkey was transformed into stock, and you know you should be starting a pot of vegetable soup and stocking up on sparkling water. But there’s that bottle of egg nog in the fridge. And what are you going to do — pour it out? I think not. Those resolutions can wait a few more days, right?

With that leftover egg nog, you’re going to make egg nog milkshakes and keep the holidays going for another few days! And wait til you see different flavor variations! Drink this alongside a slice of leftover Apple Streusel Pie or Ebinger’s Blackout Cake.

Leftover Egg Nog Milkshakes

One year, a friend brought over a bottle of egg nog at Christmas, and not only did it not get touched, but it also had no expiration date on it, and I had absolutely no idea how long it would last. Though I realized that if it wasn’t going to last 11 1/2 months, the question was probably moot, as this is a drink that really only gets consumed at a very specific time of year. Can you imagine going to a Mardi Gras party or a July barbecue or just a dinner party in September and getting offered a glass of egg nog? Actually, coming to think of it would be pretty funny.

And I cannot bear to throw anything out unless it’s really past its prime, so I decided the extra egg nog was destined to become boozy milkshakes. And not just one flavor — three!

Recipe Tip

Add a shot of whiskey, brandy, or rum if you want to spike your eggnog milkshake, and the eggnog doesn’t already have alcohol in it. Be careful not to add double booze!

Egg Nog Milkshake Ingredients

How to Make an Egg Nog Milkshake

Listen, let’s keep how stupidly easy this is all between us, ok? And then you and I can both look like rock stars when we serve these up? I think passing very small glasses of these after a holiday meal would be pretty adorable.

  1. Blend the milkshake: In a blender, combine vanilla ice cream and eggnog (along with any other flavoring ingredients – see ideas below).

  1. Serve: Blend well and pour into glasses, then top with whipped cream if you like. And there you have it—no such thing as leftover egg nog, just a milkshake waiting to be born.

Egg Nog Milkshake Flavors

Blending an extra ingredient or two into the milkshake makes it even better!

  • Vanilla Egg Nog Milkshake: Add a bit of vanilla extract, 1/2 teaspoon or so, if you want to bump up the vanilla flavor.
  • Chocolate Egg Nog Milkshake: Make the vanilla version above, skip the vanilla extract, and add 1/4 cup chocolate sauce.
  • Mango Egg Nog Milkshake: Make the vanilla version above, skip the vanilla extract, and add 1 very ripe mango, peeled and cut into chunks.

How to Garnish the Rim of Milkshake Glasses

Rimming a glass is always a fun way to dress up any drink, and milkshakes are no exception! It adds an extra sweet treat and is easy to do.

  1. Place some tiny or crushed candies or other little sweet things in small bowls (but bowls big enough for the glasses to be dipped in upside down).

Kitchen Smarts

You can use mini chocolate chips (try to find the supermini chips if you can, available at baking shops and places where baking supplies are sold), crushed peppermint bark, or candy canes (these may well be hanging around your home at this time of year as well), or little chocolate candies like M&M’s.

Anything that is small and will stick to melted chocolate is fair game. You also see some crushed fruity cereal on the rim of the mango version — we were in an orange frame of mind.

  1. Melt chocolate chips (or butterscotch or white chocolate or peanut butter chips) in a small bowl. This is best done in the microwave if you are melting a small amount. Just put the chips in the bowl and heat it for 20-second bursts, stirring between each session, until the chips are melted. You can also use a thick caramel or hot fudge sauce, but make sure it’s thick.
  2. Dip the rims of the glasses into the melted chocolate and then into a bowl with the little candy garnish. You can mix candies as well. Place these glasses in the freezer while you make the milkshakes so the chocolate can firm up and keep everything in place.
