When most of us think of dessert, we don’t necessarily think of fruit. And unless we’ve created a serious fruit paradigm in our houses, our kids definitely don’t either. Like, mom, that’s a snack, not a dessert.
I’m a firm believer that everything tastes better on a stick and, furthermore, that kids are more willing to try something if it’s on a stick. Are there a lot of sad faces at State Fairs? No, there are not, and it’s not just because everything has been deep-fried (at least I don’t think that’s the only reason – though clearly the corn dog is quite justified in its long and auspicious life).
So, one of the things that has worked in our world is to skewer up things that don’t ordinarily get skewered, and the simple change in presentation often alters the response to the food. That’s a lot of words.
Fruit salad on a stick is more fun than fruit salad NOT on a stick. There, that’s fewer words.
Just cube up whatever types of fruit are in the refrigerator, and slide them right onto a wooden skewer (you could use a chopstick if your kids are little, and you’re worried about the pointy stick). You can serve a little bit of sweetened Greek yogurt on the side for dipping, if you like (just stir in a bit of brown sugar or maple syrup or honey).
Wither skewer them up yourself, or let the kids skewer up their own combinations. Parents usually realize that kids tend to love their own creations most of all.
By the way, my kids are SO YOUNG in this video! Oh my goodness, there is nothing like an older video to make you realize what a difference 5 years can make. Geez. Ok, moving on.
