Mediterranean Garlic Yogurt Sauce is a staple in many Mediterranean and Middle Eastern kitchens, and once you start making it at home, it’s easy to see why. Creamy Greek yogurt, fresh garlic, and lemon juice come together into a sauce that’s both rich and refreshing, with just enough tang to wake up whatever it’s served with.

I first made it to accompany lamb kofte, but I think it’s amazing spooned over grilled chicken breasts, drizzled onto roasted vegetables, or served alongside rice pilaf or this Turkish chickpea salad.

This sauce delivers big flavor with minimal effort (5 minutes, start to finish), and you’ll want to serve it with everything — Mediterranean, and beyond.

What Makes This Sauce Mediterranean?

This sauce reflects classic Mediterranean flavors and techniques:

  • Yogurt-based sauces are common throughout Greece, Turkey, and the Eastern Mediterranean
  • Garlic and lemon provide brightness and balance
  • Cumin adds warmth without overpowering
  • Simple ingredients, no cooking required—hallmarks of Mediterranean home cooking

This version is not tzatziki (no cucumber or dill), but a close cousin you’ll see served alongside grilled meats and vegetable dishes throughout the region.

Ingredients

Yogurt, garlic, lemon zest, and other sauce ingredients in small bowls on table.
  • Plain yogurt – I like to use Greek yogurt, which is thicker and creamier than regular. I also like to use a more full-fat yogurt, but you can certainly use 1 or 2 percent if you like.
  • Lemon juice – Adds brightness and acidity to the sauce. You can substitute lime juice instead.
  • Minced garlic – Adds some sharp garlicky heat to the sauce – it’s best to use fresh garlic, but in a pinch, you can sub in jarred minced garlic or garlic powder.
  • Cumin – Ground cumin adds an earthy, smoky flavor, and is one of the quintessential spices used in Turkish and Middle Eastern cooking.
  • Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper – Be generous with these seasonings!

Tips for the Best Mediterranean Garlic Yogurt Sauce

  • Use thick yogurt. Greek yogurt gives the sauce body and richness.
  • Let it rest. A short chill mellows the garlic and deepens the flavor.
  • Season assertively. Yogurt needs salt to shine.
  • Grate the garlic for a sharper, more traditional garlic presence.

How to Make Garlic Yogurt Sauce

  1. Mix the ingredients: In a medium bowl, stir all of the ingredients together until smooth. Taste and adjust the seasonings.

  1. Chill and serve: Give the sauce at least 15-30 minutes to chill in the fridge for the best flavor before serving.

Variations (Still Mediterranean)

  • Greek-style: Add olive oil and chopped dill
  • Turkish-inspired: Use cumin, a pinch of Aleppo pepper, and maybe a 1/4 teaspoon of sumac
  • Levant-style: Add a touch of tahini for richness
  • Extra tangy: Increase lemon juice slightly

Make Ahead and Leftovers

For the best flavor, make this at least 1 hour and up to 1 day ahead of time. Leftovers will keep in the fridge for up to 4 days. Stir the sauce before serving.
