Manhattan Cocktail Origin

The Manhattan gets its name honestly, created at the Manhattan Club in New York City in 1874. It was made with sweet vermouth and rye, though there have been more versions of this drink than one could possibly count. Now a Sweet Manhattan connotes a Manhattan made with sweet vermouth, a Dry Manhattan is one made with dry vermouth, and a perfect Manhattan usually means a drink made with a combo of sweet and dry vermouths. The bitters is an essential ingredient, adding flavor and dimension to the drink.

Cherries in a Manhattan

Maraschino or marinated cherries are the classic garnish for Manhattans. Sometimes you see an orange twist used as a garnish, in addition to or in place of the cherries. Try to find some nice upscale marinated cherries to use in place of the traditional vermillion-syrupy maraschino cherries to give this drink a final sophisticated twist. Or get yourself the best maraschino cherries out there; Luxardo is the brand most bartenders like the most.
