Not only do my kids like a good mocktail, there are days when we could all use a refreshing mixed drink that isn’t spiked with booze.  Plus a couple of my closest adult-people-friends are non-alcohol drinkers, and I like to offer them more than just a glass of bubbly water or a soda.

Each drink is kept chilled with fresh orange and pomegranate juice ice cubes, which add flavor to the drink as they melt, instead of diluting it.   And in each drink one of the juice ice cubes has a spicy-sweet surprise – a ginger candy in the center, a sweet little chewy bonus, which is kind of fun.

But listen – if you didn’t read this in time to freeze the juice cubes, or you just don’t feel like it, regular ice will do you just fine.

The juice cubes are a Nice to Have, and not a Must Have.  You can also use all orange juice for the cubes, or all pomegranate, whatever you have on hand.  And clearly if you don’t have ginger candies lying around, or you’re not making this part of a big party plan, skip those, too….I just happened to have ginger candies lying around.

This is a drink I could see serving at an outdoor summer gathering (Memorial Day! 4th of July!  A BarbecueLabor Day!), at a holiday party (Hanukah!  Christmas!  New Year’s!  Easter!), at a baby shower, wherever a festive non-alcoholic cocktail is called for.

Double at will!  Or multiply it even more and make a pitcher, but do keep it chilled.   And if you can, put the juice cubes in the glasses and pour over the drink in front of your guests.  The dramatic colors of the purple and orange cubes are very striking – a little easy wow moment, especially impressive for the kids.

1. Insert a ginger candy into 4 cubes of an ice tray. Pour about 1/2 cup of the fresh orange juice into 4 compartments of the ice tray (2 with candies, 2 without), and pour the pomegranate juice into 4 other compartments (2 with candies, 2 without), filling each compartment. Freeze until solid.
