The most refreshing and simple way to use stone fruit in a smoothie!
Juicy peaches and plums make a beautiful and oh-so-summery smoothie blended up with tangy yogurt and a spot of sweetener. Whenever we go fruit picking, I am a walking example of the adage, “Your eyes are bigger than your stomach.” I can never leave without a ridiculous surplus of whatever is on the trees, be it apples, peaches, nectarines, plums, and so on. Even though my family is no slouch in the fruit-eating department, we can only go through so much fruit before it gets squishy and sad.
The answer is always to peel and freeze the fruit. And since my family sure does love a good smoothie, that’s where most of it ends up throughout the following months. The pleasure of a truly amazing peach smoothie in January is a ridiculously wonderful way to start the day or take a pick-me-up afternoon break without resorting to caffeine. And ginger in smoothies brightens the flavor and settles the tummy.
If you haven’t frozen your own fruit beforehand, you can absolutely make this peach smoothie recipe with commercially available frozen fruit from the freezer aisle of the market.

Fresh or Frozen Fruit in a Smoothie?
You’ll see that this smoothie recipe calls for a combination of fresh and frozen fruit. Frozen makes for a more milkshake-thick smoothie, whereas the fresh fruit helps things blend up nicely. The idea is to use some of each, and truly, the exact amounts don’t matter.
- If you have only fresh fruit available, you could add some ice, which will thicken things up, though dilute the intensity of the fruitiness in the smoothie a little bit.
- If you only have frozen fruit, you would have a nice, thick shake. Another option is to partially thaw the frozen fruit — this is what I often end up doing.
- Make sure the fruit you’re using is really, truly ripe or it won’t have the amazing flavor, and it won’t blend up as easily in the smoothie. It also will be harder to peel if it isn’t ripe.
- If you aren’t using frozen fresh fruit (as in, fruit that you froze yourself) then absolutely, positively use packaged frozen fruit. It’s usually of terrific quality.
Ginger Peach Yogurt Smoothie Ingredients
- Greek yogurt – Use vanilla Greek yogurt here for a richer flavor. Any percentage will be fine, though I always go for fuller-fat yogurt, which has more flavor and creaminess.
- Peach yogurt – Your favorite brand.
- Peaches – You’ll want to use a combination of fresh and frozen fruit for the best smoothie texture: thick but not too thick.
- Ginger syrup – Or honey.
- Plums – Frozen (peeled first if possible; see below).
- Fresh mint – Don’t use dried; if you don’t have fresh, skip it!
How to Make Ginger Peach Yogurt Smoothies
- Blend the smoothie: Place the vanilla yogurt, peach yogurt, fresh peaches, and ginger syrup into a blender. Blend well. Add the frozen peaches and plums and puree until smooth.
- Serve.
How to Peel and Freeze Stone Fruit
To peel stone fruit (meaning peaches, plums, apricots, nectarines), bring a pot of water to a boil. Drop the fruit in, 3 or so pieces at a time, and let sit in the simmering water for about 30 seconds. Remove with a slotted spoon and let sit until cool enough to handle.
Peel off the skins, then cut the fruit away from the pit. You can then cut it into small chunks and place it in a sturdy, freezer-proof, zipper-top bag and freeze it for up to 6 months. Be sure to press the air out of the bag before sealing it, and label the bag with the type of fruit and the date.
Tips and Variations
- Mixing the liquid ingredients before adding the frozen ones helps everything blend up more easily.
- Thanks to the yogurt, this is a creamier smoothie, but you could also use 2 cups of fresh orange juice for a different but no less delicious result.
- If you don’t have ginger syrup you can add a bit more honey and a teaspoon of minced fresh ginger. Or. make your own simple syrup with ginger.
