This is a 5-ingredient recipe — including the salmon! And it takes less than 30 minutes. Make the marinade while the oven preheats, and give the salmon a quick 15 minutes of marinating time. Oh, yes, quickly put on a pot of rice and make a salad or simple side because dinner is almost ready!

In my experience, if anyone, kid or adult, is not a true fish lover, you will have your best shot at converting them by using Asian flavors. The combo of salty-sweet, sometimes with a touch of spiciness or umami, cuts through anything resembling “fishiness.”

Some nice ideas for sides for this Asian glazed salmon would be Clean and Spicy Asian Greens, Asian Bok Choy, Chili Crunch Brussels Sprouts, or Thai Cucumber Salad. A scoop of fluffy white rice is never a bad idea with anything Asian-inspired.

Tips and Variations

  • If you have time and want a more deeply flavored salmon dish, marinate the fish in the fridge for about 2 hours before cooking.
  • You can use other fish filets in place of the salmon; try cod or Arctic char.
  • You will be very happy if you line the baking sheet with parchment or foil because it saves clean-up time. Spray it with nonstick baking spray and place the salmon pieces on the sheet so they are not touching.

Asian Salmon Ingredients

Raw salmon, oyster sauce, soy sauce, and honey on marble surface.
  • Salmon – You’ll find that wild salmon is leaner than farmed salmon, but it also has a more assertive flavor. Either will work in the marinade.
  • Oyster sauce – A staple ingredient in a well-stocked Asian pantry.
  • Soy sauce – Less-sodium soy is always a great option because you can control the salt in any dish you’re making.
  • Honey – For that touch of sweetness that adds a subtle glaze to the salmon once cooked.
  • Sesame oil – Just a touch will add a nice extra flavor to the marinade. Choose regular or spicy…it’s up to you.

How to Make Asian Salmon

  1. Prepare the oven and baking sheet: Preheat the oven to 450 degrees F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil. Spray with nonstick spray.
  2. Marinade the salmon: In a small bowl or container, combine the oyster sauce, soy sauce, honey, and sesame oil. Pour the marinade over the salmon pieces, making sure the sides are coated. Let sit for 15 minutes.
  3. Roast the salmon and serve: Roast for 10 to 12 minutes, until the outside has a nice glazed look and the fish is cooked to your liking. Serve hot.
